She’d thought it would be easy. He might deny it until the cows came home, but he was as drawn to her as she was to him, and seducing him out of his nasty temper should have been as simple as kissing him. But at her first touch, he stiffened, his hands clamping at her waist to push her away. Desperate to stop him, she clung tighter, her hands clutching, her mouth frantic as she kissed him again and again. “Don’t,” she cried softly against his hard, unyielding lips. “Please, Zeb, don’t do this.”

Murdock froze at the sound of his Christian name on her tongue, the sane, rational part of his brain that wasn’t overcome by fury staggered by the feel of her against him. Damn her daring. What the hell did she think she was doing? He wasn’t some inexperienced kid at the mercy of his own hormones; it took a hell of a lot more than a kiss to distract him when he was in a rage.

Or at least, that was what he tried to tell himself. But while his mind might be caught up in the red-hot heat of anger, his body was concentrating on something altogether different. Like the tantalizing fullness of her breasts pressed to his chest and the irresistible temptation of her hips and thighs nudging his. Just like the siren who had trespassed in his dreams night after night for the past week, she seduced with nothing more than her nearness.

He should have pushed her away then. His fingers were already tightening on her waist to do so, but she never gave him the chance. As if she sensed his intentions, the desperate pressure of her mouth against his suddenly softened. Murmuring his name, she melted against him, her tongue gliding along his bottom lip, teasing, cajoling, seducing.

She kissed like a woman who had been alone too long, lonely too long, like his taste was something new and heady, something to be savored. As if he was something to be savored, he thought with a low groan. And suddenly the heat fogging his brain had nothing to do with anger and everything to do with the woman in his arms. Dazed, he realized he’d released her waist, but only to pull her close until she was flush against him. She fit him perfectly, as if she’d been made just for him by someone who’d known his every dream and fantasy. And her mouth. Lord, the woman had a sweet mouth. She lit a candle in his blood, and he could no more resist returning her kiss than a wolf could resist the call of the wild. Not knowing if he murmured her name or a curse, he slanted his mouth across hers and gave himself to the desire he’d been fighting from the moment he’d first laid eyes on her.

When he was finally forced to let her up for air, they were both breathless, their lungs straining. For what seemed like an eternity, they just stared at each other in stunned surprise, neither able to move.
